Resisting Clients. Is that a thing?

“My client is resisting.”
It’s a phrase we’ve all heard.
Maybe even said ourselves early on.
But here’s something worth considering:
Resistance often shows up when there’s something to resist against.
...
It can happen when:
We complicate what could be simple.
We approach with judgment instead of curiosity.
We place our map of the world over theirs — even with good intentions.
That’s when the ego dance starts.
And let’s be honest — no one wins a battle over “who’s right” when the unconscious is listening.
So what’s the alternative?
What if, instead of trying to push through…
You just didn’t create the tension in the first place?
What if you could:
~ Building rapport — the kind that creates connection.
~ Calibrating — noticing tone, posture, breath, not just words.
~ Asking the kind of questions that invite insight.
~ Staying curious and adaptable, based on what’s actually happening in front of you.
As John La Valle says,
“Techniques work perfectly… until they don’t.”
And when they don’t, these are the skills that make the difference.
Yes, techniques matter.
And yes, they need to be practiced — precisely, properly, consistently.
But scripts?
Those one-size-fits-all “done-for-you” hypnosis scripts some people sell?
...
They don’t account for this moment, with this person, in this state and their perception of reality.
You do. You can. You must, to be able to notice/find/create/use the difference that makes the difference.
That’s why we train the way we do — not just to “know more,” but to see more.
To hear what’s being said.
To notice when things shift.
And to meet people where they are — not where we expect them to be.
And you cannot do this if you are in your head trying to remember a script (or even worse, reading it from the paper), instead of paying attention to what matters in the moment of now, fully present, in the right state, congruently, resourcefully, paying attention to the person and their feedback.
That’s the kind of work we explore deeply during our live trainings — like the one coming up in Bali this November.
That’s where your power and mastery lives;
